Just back on the train after watching the Newsjack recording. Both my sketches written in the writers’ meeting yesterday got recorded. Not sure either of them really lit up the room though, despite the work the script editors had done on them since last night. Also a got a couple of lines in the Valentines Austerity [...]

Everything’s happening at once
So last week I moved house, marked a large pile of professional exam papers (new pile now arrived) and went to my first ever Newsjack meeting. More on the Newsjack meeting will follow once I’ve caught my breath (but, let’s be honest, you won’t read it until just before the next series). On Newsjack, some [...]
I’ve got something on Newsjack Series 7 Episode 4
Although I don’t know what. I got the famous Newsjack “something in” email. And I’m on the list http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kvs8r/features/episode-four But they never tell you what in advance. I’ll just have to listen to the show. (Not because they enjoy us being in suspense but just because of the practical difficulty of telling everyone before the show.) [...]
My Newsjack Series 7 Episode 3 submissions
Rather tired with recording Live from Kirrin Island on Saturday and also trying to get everything sorted for moving house (excuses, excuses!) so only managed to send two rushed sketches and four one liners to Newsjack this week. My sketches were on Ed Milliband trying to get on a TV comedy show like Letterman A [...]
Newsjack Series 7 Episode 2 – sketches sent
I’ve sent three sketches to Newsjack again (didn’t manage to write six like I always intend, and rarely do). (Submission guidelines are here in case you haven’t seen them yet – still time for one liners this week.) This week’s sketches were on Andrew Mitchell insulting the police (like everyone I would guess?) Waitrose’s twitter problems [...]
That Putin sketch is now Newsjack’s preview clip on their front page
My Putin sketch (very ably rewritten by the excellent Tom Neenan) is the preview clip for Newsjack. You can hear it here. And of course the rest of the show at 10.30 tonight on BBC Radio 4 extra.
My submissions for Newsjack Series 7 Episode 1
Are now all sent off. I sent three sketches on 1. Vladimir Putin – turns out some of his stunts were staged… (no, really!) 2. Richard III bones dug up in Leicestershire 3. Mike Tyson wanting to act in musicals Plus ten one liners. Fingers extra crossed this week as I’m off to the recording [...]
More on writing for Newsjack
In case you haven’t seen enough articles on writing for Newsjack here’s a good description of the emotional rolloercoaster of it all from Marc Paterson. There’s also James Cary’s now classic explanation of why you should give it a go. I already mentioned Tom Neenan’s blog post and of course I keep writing about NewsJack (when I [...]
Newsjack is back! Series 7 first submission deadline is 17th September.
Submission guidelines are up on the BBC website. The deadline for one liners is now 4pm on Tuesday. Last series it was 5pm. Don’t get caught out! Otherwise it looks pretty similar to last series submission rules. There is also a page of tips which gives some general pointers and a a reminder of the [...]
Newsjack Series 6 Episode 1 – Initial analysis
Ok, I realise it’s possible to overthink this. But if it’s possible to overthink something, I usually will so here goes… First off a list of the topics covered in Episode 1. Generally they won’t want to cover the same story again next episode so I would avoid these unless it is big ongoing story [...]
